"Sorry if you think I became over-excited," Stacy said, "but you have to
admit
that this is staggering stuff. Besides, don't forget that I'm
supposed
to be a news reporter. Dealing
in hyperbole probably comes naturally to me. I can see how it might seem
over the top
to you, though, given that you must be about the calmest, least emotional
person I've
ever met."
"I don't mind your excitement, but please remember we're in a public place and try to keep your voice down and avoid dramatic gestures. We don't want to attract attention to ourselves. Now, I wonder if there's anything here to explain how the government intends to take away people's memories on the massive scale that their scheme requires? The dememorizer that they used on us wouldn't be practical if they want to take away the memories of millions, and ultimately billions, of people." "They'd have to use some sort of broadcast system, maybe from satellites to ensure worldwide coverage," Stacy suggested. "So their own people would have to be made resistant to the beam, or whatever it is, in some way," Helen mused. "But the whole thing doesn't seem to make any sense. Surely if they take away people's memories on a massive scale, civilisation will collapse? And I can't see how that could be to the government's benefit." "That wouldn't happen, if they can install the false memories at the same time as taking away the genuine ones." "But wouldn't the false memories need to be tailored for each individual, which would be a tremendous task? The whole thing seems insane." "So I guess there must be someone not just evil but insane who's behind it." "How have they persuaded the government to go along with it, though? I mean, I know our politicians tend not to be exactly moral paragons, but this seems to be on an altogether different level of wickedness. And how could something as big as this have been kept from leaking out, even with the help of the dememorizer? A lot of people must be involved, and you'd think somebody would have blown the whistle on it." Helen replied: "Presumably somebody did leak it, to you. You must have gotten your information from somewhere. And someone must have leaked it to my group, of course, though I was never told who. As to how they persuaded the government, perhaps they've given members of the government false memories? The government could be the tools of whoever are behind this."
