"We're very pleased to meet you, Master Hatch," Fred said. "I am Fred,
this is
Astra, and this is Alex." For he felt that now was not the time to stand
on ceremony
and give their ranks.
"Thank you for saving our
lives. How do you come to be all alone here, so far from civilisation?" "I
was left
here by a pirate ship many years ago. Their intention was that I should be
eaten
by the bunnies, but as you saw I am more than a match for them. At first
my main fear
was that the loneliness might send me mad, for you are the first people I
have seen in
the ten years I have been here. The loneliness no longer bothers me,
though."
Fred wasn't at all sure that this strange man wasn't mad. "We are hoping to find our way back to civilisation," he said. "Would you like to come with us?" "You will never make it. The distance is much too great and there are too many dangers on the way. Besides, I've come to the conclusion that civilisation is much overrated. But I wish you good luck." "Thank you. Can you tell us which of the local fruit is safe to eat? For the type we sampled had a most disconcerting effect on us. Astra said it was Zerm's doing, but I suspect that it was just a quirk of nature, for why should Zerm allow us to reverse the effect simply by eating more of the fruit?" "I know nothing of this Zerm, but much in these parts is imbued with magic. I guess that you refer to the sex-change fruit. I have found by trial and error what is safe to eat. Fortunately none of the magical effects seem to be permanent. But now I must bid you good day." And with that the strange man turned and loped away. "Come back!" Fred called. "We want to find out what we can eat safely." But Hatch paid him no attention, and to follow him would take them back into the fumes of the volcano.
