Fred grew to accept his fate as a passenger within Hannah's growing body.
Hannah lived alone with her mother, not knowing who her father had been. They were poor but, with a little assistance from Belboz, they managed quite well. As the years passed, Hannah grew into a very pretty young girl. By the age of thirteen she was already showing signs that she would develop the large assets to compare with those of from her mother. It was on Hannah's thirteenth birthday when Belboz arrived with a present, and a proposition.
