Confusion and Reassurance

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 12992

"Well, that's fair enough. But whatever decision you come to, we can still be friends, can't we?"

Nat's voice had an anxious, pleading quality to it. It seemed to Stacy that their roles had somehow reversed. Suddenly it seemed to be Nat who was the dependent one.

Stacy's mind was swimming. As good as Nat had been to her, she didn't want to say the wrong thing, especially with how helpless Natalia seemed right now. There was genuine feeling there. This was, arguably, the most candid this woman had been with her so far, and something in her wanted to reciprocate, but she couldn't be sure. Stacy decided then to say the one thing she knew Nat needed to hear.

"Of course we can," she murmured weakly, "of course we can. How could I promise any less after all that you've done for me?"

Something in Natalia seemed to crumble at those words, and she looked as if she was about to speak, opening her mouth, but then she just curled up, sighing.

"Nat, are you okay?"

"Yeah, Stacy, I guess I am. It's just...it's just that it was so hard to say that."

Stacy exhaled sharply, and from nowhere her heart started to race. She felt as if she was swooning momentarily, and then her vision clouded over. Suddenly, she got a flash almost like a memory. She was crouched on a rocky knoll clad only in tatters, breathing heavy sounding, almost a growl, looking up at the full moon. Seeing the moon, a tension seemed to build in her gut, a building pressure that was suddenly unleashed as a savage wolfish howl. Then, the sound of angry shouting was heard and torchlights appeared in the distance.

The odd vision dissolved then, only to be replaced by another. It was morning, and she was stumbling, her body criscrossed with scratches from running through brambles, the tatters of the previous vision apparently discarded as she stumbled naked towards a small woodland stone dwelling, exhausted. A young woman clad simply in a white peasant dress stood in the doorway, bearing a fur cloak folded over one arm. As she approached the woman, the cloak was put gently over her shoulders.

And then they kissed.

The vision faded quickly, and Stacy composed herself, returning to reality to hear Natalia speaking.

"Stacy, maybe...maybe I should've kept that to myself."

"Nat, I can't tell for sure, but I have a feeling I'd say this even if I had all my marbles still. You just have to realize we should never regret what we do or say, so long as we believe in it..."

Dr. Johannes Myer sits in his office at Empire State University, staring at several smooth polished stones upon his desk.

He hates the helpless feeling of waiting, of the matter taken out of his hands. As a Zelator of the Thothmes Society, he's used to being in control.

"My will be done," he mutters sullenly.

The first principle of the society.

One enforces their will upon the world because such is the way of those with the strength to do so. If you can, then it is your right.

It infuriates him not to have the upper hand.

He muses on his adversary.

Her pedigree is impressive enough. Originally a neopagan spaeworker, a runecaster, she had traveled as extensively as he and Stanton had, their paths crossing often. She too had been approached by the Thothmes Society, but had declined. That was an insult that would have warranted her death, yet somehow she had evaded them. He hadn't found out until much later the reason why. She had fallen in with the Thessalians, the greek witches who paid homage to the Eryines. Their arts added to her already potent runecasting had given her the mystical might to give the Society the laugh.

Myer suddenly is aware of a faint buzzing in the base of his skull, and, realizing what this means, glances down at the polished stones before him. They vibrate in place, and slowly, one of them changes color, becoming a translucent cobalt blue.

Myer picks up the phone quickly and dials a number, waiting while it rings, then speaking.

"Stanton? We've got a problem. The Subject might fully regain her memories by the time we reach her..."

They sat there for the longest time, simply leaning against each other, not speaking but certainly enjoying taking solace in each other. Night fell.

Then, Natalia's stomach rumbled loudly.

She blushed at the noise.
"Uhm, want to get something to eat, Stacy?"

"Wow. We even missed lunch. Yeah. Want to go somewhere?"

  1. "Yeah. I'd like that very much."
  2. "Are you sure you want to go out? It might be dangerous. Maybe I should cook something"
  3. Then, a silver bell which Natalia had hung over the doorframe rang as if tossed by an idle breeze. Natalia noticed this, and seemed worried.
