Edgar walked in the mist of rain just looking. He didn't know for what,
but he knew he had to keep looking. After some ten minutes he was soaked
and not feeling any closer to finding what he was after. Of course,
Edgar's "feelings" were not always trustworthy. He stumbled on concrete
steps and looking up he saw the high facade of a church, a Presbyterian
church. He walked in simply because he wanted out of the cold mist. The
church was empty and only half-lit with electric light. He sat in a pew
seeking rest when his eye fell on a black-bound book. Picking it up he
saw that it was the Bible. He flipped its pages absent-mindedly until his
fingers hit a book mark. It was in the Book of Baruch. What his eye
beheld did not please him any.
O Israel, how vast is the house of God, how broad the scope of His dominion: vast and endless, high and immeasurable! In it were born the giants, renowned at the first, stalwarts, skilled in war. Not these did God choose, nor did He give them the way of understanding; They perished for lack of prudence, perished through their folly. Edgar put the Book down.
Damn! Damn! Damn! I swear by all that is holy I will find the truth! I will not die like those before me in ignorance and stupidity and folly! This is the 21st century for crying out loud! times have gotta change, and I swear that if I am the first of my kind to live and learn that I will, I swear I will!!!
Then Edgar heard a noise in the otherwise quiet church.
