Bugsy called in a favor from an old friend, a large man who called himself
Honest Ed. Based on their brief encounter, Fred wouldn't have
listed 'honest' among the adjectives which he might use to describe his
impressions of the chap, but he did help them out by giving Bugsy a deal
on an old, sky-blue K-Car (a nice reliant automobile), so Fred put up with
the juvenile 'Hi Fred, I'm Ed' jokes.
They pulled out of Ed's dusty parking lot. Since Fred and Astra didn't know how to drive, or indeed even how to operate the door handles, Bugsy realized he'd be doing the driving. He handed a map to Fred. "Here buddy," he said as he yanked the wheel to change lanes. "We're at 12th and Knight. Do we go left or right?" "Not this again," muttered Fred as he struggled to make sense of the maze of tiny crisscrossing lines. "Never mind," apologised Bugsy, pulling the vehicle over. "Let me see." Bugsy studied his map briefly. "Well whattaya know," he chuckled in delight. "I was a little off...it looks like it's not even 500 miles. We could do this in a day!" Astra and Fred looked at each other in amazement as Bugsy floored the accelerator. Bugsy's lack of knowledge regarding Canadian geography was not unusual for a New Yorker. He had never been to visit his sister, and was glad to realise how close she was. "No wonder they're always complaining about us polluting their air..." On the way...
