Fred wanted to protest that he had never claimed to be a particularly
strong swimmer,
and that to swim a couple of miles in fifteen minutes was actually pretty
good, but
he was still panting from the exertion of the swim too much to speak for
the moment. He
managed to drag himself to his feet, feeling heavy after having spent some
time in the
water. Robert did the same.
The four of them were on a broad sandy beach. Inland from the beach was a tropical jungle. It was no surprise that they were still in the tropics, for they could not have come more than a few hundred miles at most from the island where they had been marooned. Far in the distance, they could see a mountain range low on the horizon. It must have been a very high one, since some of the peaks were snowcapped.
