Adrift at sea with no sails and no shirts, and running dangerously low on
food, water, patience and ideas, things looked bleak for our heroes. Fred
passed the hours imagining that things might get so bad they might have to
kill one of their number for food. In his heart of hearts, he knew they
would never resort to this, probably because thirst would become a problem
long before starvation, but Fred had few doubts about who it would be if
they did, and a man could dream, couldn't he?
Astra and Alexis fantasized about being back home in Aqualaria, with friends and family gathering round to hear their tales of adventure in rapt fascination. In their youth they had heard many a story of the daring travels of their elders, all of which had been thrilling and action- packed. Alexis reflected that she had never heard a story about these brave warriors sitting on their asses in a boat for days on end, but after all this was only her first adventure. These things took practice. Robert just fantasized about Astra and Alexis, and it's best if we don't go into detail about that. Anyway, after a few hours of all this, they sighted... "Land!" cried Fred, standing up so suddenly that the boat tipped over. A few miles to what a moment ago would have been starboard lay a large land mass. Exciting as this was, it remained a secondary concern for a short period of time as four very surprised people thrashed about, got their bearings, treaded water and grabbed onto the overturned vessel. "Damn, this water's bloody cold," shivered Robert. "If I die of pneumonia I'm going to kill you, you idiot," he added, glaring at Fred. "It would be worth it," muttered Fred. Astra looked at them both quizzically. Alexis giggled. "See you on shore," called Astra, and was off, her powerful legs propelling her towards the land, her sister close behind. Fifteen minutes later, gasping and heaving, Fred and Robert collapsed on the sweet land.
