"I never thought of it that way, but you're right," Alexis commented. "I
definitely got the short end of the stick out of this deal. But then,
she's always had it better than me...Mom & Dad liked her best, and because
she was a girl she was revered and trained to be the next ruler of
Aqualaria, while I had to care for the animals and do housework."
Fred realized he had broached a sensitive topic. As Alexis carried on, lamenting her lifelong role as the shunned son, Fred sympathized with her. He too knew the burden of life as a young noble, and the pain of a parent's disappointment. Fred began to feel a closeness with Alexis, and a desire to share that closeness with her. However, the fact that she was really a man made him uncomfortable. Was it right for him to have feelings for her? Was it really a man, trapped in a woman's body, that he desired? It was so hard, in these modern times, to understand relationships...what with royal politics always interfering, being confined on small watercraft without clothing, wizards popping up and changing people's sexes all the time... Fred needed time to think about these things, but would not be able to do so for the moment. Astra had overheard Alexis' complaints, and lashed out. "You pathetic little sod! You think you've got it so rough! Did you ever think about how hard I had it? The pressure of living up to Mummy & Daddy's every expectation? The duties of being heir to the throne? The training and the work, and dealing with dim-witted suitors every spare moment? Did it ever occur to you that I might want to confide in my brother, to have him for the one friend in the world I could be myself with? No, you never gave me any support at all! You hated me and idolized me all at once, just like everyone else! Do you think the wizard was cursing you when he turned you into my twin? He was cursing me! Now every time I look at you, I remember the daughter I had to be, and the brother I've lost!" Astra burst into tears. A stunned silence fell over the boat.
