Fred grabbed the bottle, which was made of smoked glass, meaning that its
contents
could not be discerned. It had a cork in place, so there was hope that
whatever
was inside might be unharmed by the seawater. Fred knew that it was
traditional to find a message,
but since their boat was at the mercy of the wind they were unlikely to be
able
to take advantage of any such message. Personally, he rather hoped the
contents
would be beer, which would be a welcome addition to the supplies they had
brought with them. It was the right size of bottle to contain beer, though
the label had long since
peeled away.
