Stacy realized that it was very, very likely that this maniac was going to
take his knife to her eventually, anyway, and resolved that if she was
going to go down, she was at least going to go down fighting. So she
pretended to go along with him quietly, but kept alert for any lapse of
attention that would give her an opening. Just as she was about to despair of ever getting one, an opportunity presented itself. A soft sound -- Stacy couldn't identify it, and didn't particularly care -- came from down one of the dimly lit side corridors. The man glanced in that direction -- away from Stacy -- and Stacy acted. She delivered a swift chop to the hand holding the knife (a move she seemed to remember seeing in a movie, though the specifics of the memory were, of course, not available to her). Almost simultaneously, she punched the man in the gut.
