Whoever had been responsible for firing the crossbow bolt had apparently
been intending
to disable rather than to kill, judging by the way its tip had been
blunted. The bolt
struck Astra on the temple. She said: "Unh", and fell into the lake with a
splash.
Fearful that she would drown whilst unconscious, Fred leapt in after her.
In the dim light and with the water of the lake being murky, Fred was afraid that he might not find Astra in time. Luckily, however, he soon spotted her gradually sinking body and managed to bring her to the surface. When he had done so, he looked for the raft. It had drifted some way away, and Chakotay lay prone upon it, apparently having been hit by another crossbow bolt. Velus was apparently still fast asleep. Canoes were now putting out into the lake, obviously with the intent of taking them all captive.
