Fred, known more recently as Cornelia, stood in shock in the throne room. She hadn't known what to expect upon receiving a summons from the king, who hadn't really acknowledged her in her time here, but it hadn't been this. "We know that, as of now, you have nowhere else to go," the king explained. "And I understand you've been a diligent and hard worker. I see no reason you can't continue on with this post which you've settled so well into." It was clear he thought he was doing her a great favor, and she was frozen, because... while this was not her plan, and was no prospect at all for the knight she wanted to return to being... it was probably the absolute best chance for the young girl that she was. How was she to decide? She'd enjoyed these last months, she really had, and in many ways she could see herself work happily as a maid for the rest of her life... but in many others she wanted to scream at the very notion. If she said no, she could end up trapped in a miserable dead-end life as Cornelia, wanting to be Fred but finding it impossible; if she said yes, she would have virtually no chance at returning to her old life of honour and independence, and Fred would be dead forever. If she said no, she might have a chance one day to be Sir Fred again and regain all she had lost; if she said yes, she was guaranteed a comfortable, secure life. And it still remained a fact that, somehow, she didn't really want to go back to being a man. She had come to love all manner of soft, feminine things, and come to believe that she was far better suited to a life like this. But where Cornelia was most certainly not equipped to pursue Fred's noble quest, Fred most certainly was. The choice seemed impossible.
