"Hello, my dear," rasped the hag in the dead of night. "What a beautiful child you have." Cinnamon, sitting in the rocking chair nursing Lottie, had tensed up tremendously, and Lottie had noticed. But just before she began to scream, the hag raised a finger to her lips. "I wouldn't disturb the baby. And anyway, you'll find that everyone in this building is quite deeply asleep except for us. How refreshed they shall feel upon awakening. "Who are you?" asked Cinnamon, trembling. "What do you want?" The hag smiled, and Cinnamon thought it looked amused.. "Only to offer you a deal. I shall fix you - I shall give you your heart's deepest, truest desire." Cinnamon should have said no straightaway, but she hesitated. To what could the hag be referring? To return to being Fred? To be strong again? Surely she couldn't refer to her memory problems, could she? Though those did cause her and her family and friends a great deal of hardship... "What exactly is my heart's desire?" she asked timidly. The hag smiled. "So tense and fraught you are, dearest. Let me help you." And she began to intone a soft chant, just as she'd done two years before, and, just as before, Cinnamon's already barely functional mind went soft and smooth. She settled back down into her chair, and the hag shook her head, saying, "You know, you might not realize it, but that mind of yours is really your greatest weakness. So, here's the deal in full: your heart's greatest desire, immediately, for your daughter there, in thirteen years' time. It's an excellent deal. Do you accept?"
