An unlikely party

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 118837

The nature of this hitch was, of course, draconic.

The blaze came out of nowhere, and quickly claimed both Rullmend and Ernendaff, with Torin narrowly escaping. Gerkka and To'og were too dazed to really realize what was happening until it was over, but when it was, Torin was too weak to continue to hold up the enchantment, and in fact blacked out just after they reached safety by a lakeside.

To'og immediately went to grab the biggest rock he could find to bludgeon him to death with it, but Gerkka knocked it out of his hand just before he could. "What?" grunted To'og, consternated not only that he had been hindered, but that he was weak enough to be hindered. "He take from clan! He die!"

"No!" argued Gerkka. "No kill! We ask when wake. He help can!"

To'og grumbled, but he agreed to sit still and wait for the puny human to wake up. But before he did, he took all his equipment and threw it into the water.

At length Torin stirred, and he was shocked to realize that he was still alive. The first thing To'og said was, "You make ogre! Bad man! Take back!"

He blinked, and looked aroud in increasing panic. "Where's my staff?"

"In water," said Gerkka helpfully.

He groaned. "I need it back to do any magic. But..." He glanced nervously at To'og. "I don't know if I'm powerful enough to change you back by myself."

To'og roared, though it wasn't nearly as impressive a sound as he was used to.

Torin flinched back. "But I can probably take you to someone who can! A-and I think in the meantime I should be able to make you stronger, at least."

Gerkka, whose mind couldn't multitask, was, at the moment, heavily distracted by thoughts of the dragon. They had been through something horrible, and she was feeling the strangest sense of obligation to... make sure it didn't happen again. Abruptly, she said, "We kill dragon."

To'og blinked in bewilderment, and so did Torin. "Come again?"

"We kill dragon," she said again, confidently. "Then we go back to place. To..." She struggled. "Um... can make brain big again?"

"Uh... yeah, if I get my staff back, I should be able to do that. I can do plenty of simple stuff, just not... complex shapechanges."

"To'og no like!" To'og argued in disbelief. "Gerkka have baby in belly!"

"Forest in fire go down," Gerkka pointed out to him sadly. "No more clan. We kill dragon who do this!"

To'og blinked again, slowly realizing what she was saying. Ire seemed to come over him, and he ran off at once, screaming, expressing that ire in the only way he knew how: by destroying things. As he punched a tree till his knuckles were raw, Torin fished his things out of the water, and sat by Gerkka. "I'm sorry I can't make you human either," he said to her quietly.

She shook her head. "Gerkka no human," she told him. "But Gerkka can be hero like human."

And so the unlikely trio set out on their noble quest: a young, inexperienced wizard, a pregnant ogress, and an ogre trapped in the body of a human man. Torin cast frequent spells on Gerkka to keep her brain working better, and eventually her speech began to improve, though she still wasn't anywhere near as sharp as Torin was.

Their first order of business was to

  1. find a way to make a bit of money. They needed supplies, and at the very least To'og needed some proper clothes.
  2. find a place to stay for a little while for Gerkka to have her baby and figure out how to proceed from there.
  3. find someone else to join their party - a more experienced mage or a rogue, perhaps.
