The odd, glowing beings explained that they would be dumped, virtually
helpless, on a forest world a couple systems over. (Of course they weren't
sure what the being meant by this).
Minature viewers would monitor their every move, while creatures bet money on various outcomes. Sure, they could destroy the viewers but for everyone destroyed, another would take their place and a painful shock would be administered to their systems from "way above the clouds". The being vanished. Time passed. Suddenly the white area was replaced by a rocky clearing. To the north was an animal trail leading deeper into the woods. To the south was a grassy field leading up a hill. East and west led into the dark woods too but westwards was the sound of a river.
