Such punishments were rare, but had been previously employed under unusual circumstances. It was a bit ironic, in a way - this girl believed herself to be in the wrong shape, and as a result of that madness, she was being assigned a new one, though it still wouldn't be the one she wanted.

The king agreed, and after a lengthy discussion, they decided what new form the young girl would take. Her mind and memories would be left alone, as manipulating such things was seen as cruel and unusual by most of civilization, though her faculties might end up somewhat limited over time as her mind settled into her new brain.

At last, Arahim went to the still-sleeping girl, and began to weave his magic. Under his careful manipulation, she took the form of

  1. an ogre - perfect for construction and other work that required heavy lifting.
  2. a mare - to be added to the royal stables.
  3. a bloodhound - to be added to the ranks of the king's hunting dogs.
  4. a hawk - to be trained to deliver messages.
  5. a leech - very useful for bloodletting.
  6. a cat - she couldn't be relied upon to perform any important functions, but she could bring joy to someone as a pet.
  7. a dragon - though most person-to-dragon transformations went wrong somehow, if he somehow did find success, she might grow to be able to face the dragon!
  8. ...well, actually, she wasn't changing. That was very odd. What could be blocking his magic?
