It was a great skill - survival was so much easier when you could choose between being a small creature that didn't need much to fill its belly, and a big, scary, intimidating human at will. She learned to understand the world from the little animals' perspectives, and felt greatly inclined to protect them when possible. When the breeding season came around, it was alarming at first, but she gradually accepted the whole process as a part of her new life. And so she became a very familiar fixture to the squirrel population; they regarded her as family, and she felt likewise.
