That was only what Fred had been expecting. "I know that I can't continue to be a knight here as a female," she told Arahim. "Allaria's knights have always been all male, and I can't see them making an exception for me. But Aqualaria has female warriors - knights in all but name - and, after a lot of thought, I've decided to go there and enlist."

"Our two countries are on friendly terms, so I can't see His Majesty raising any objection. But would the Aqualarian warriors accept you into their ranks? You would be a foreigner, after all."

"I don't know. But it can't hurt to go and find out."

"It would be a long and perilous journey for you to undertake, not knowing whether it might be in vain. Also you are so petite that you can't be very strong. You hardly seem cut out any more to be a fighter."

1. Arahim eventually manages to dissuade her.
2. Fred will not be budged. Assuming King Embron does not forbid it, she's going and that's that.
