What followed was a flurry of activity. Evidently the city—Rodjuvik—had also undergone some recent draconic assault, but the guard force had managed to drive the beast away. Also, according to the people who took them in, they were the first survivors to emerge from the devastation. They were brought first to a healer's home. It was a middle-aged man named Matai who quickly busied himself slathering some kind of salve on their burns. It stung at first, but quickly became cool and pleasant, and they contentedly waited the hour it took for it to dry. During this time, several people were coming in and out of the house. One of them brought clothes: a sensible, sturdy tunic for Tandrus, and an ankle-length wool dress for Lila. Another brought two generous meals, which the two of them ate ravenously. Also during this time, Tandrus did a bit of talking, sharing their names, the fact that Lila was mute, and the immediate circumstances surrounding the destruction—mainly, that they had been on holiday by the lake. His people skills were rusty as could be, but given the circumstances, it seemed many things could be forgiven.
