They remained in the water while the countryside burned. Lila became tired before Tandrus did, and he held her close to keep her steady. Hours passed before the fire at last began to die down, but when they attempted to leave the water, they burned the bottoms of their feet, and fell gracelessly back into the water. "Guess we're doomed to forever be exposed to more light and heat than our skin can handle, huh?" Tandrus attempted to joke. It was an odd thing to say, but it wasn't like either of them had any social graces to speak of. Lila gave him no response. It was midmorning before they were able to drag themselves into the soggy flora around the edge of the lake and properly rest. There they stayed for another few hours, and around noon, Tandrus at last struggled to his feet and said, "We should go." Lila looked up at him questioningly. He offered nothing further, saying only, "Come on." At this point it was almost instinctive to simply follow his lead, so she struggled to her feet as well. They began to walk, their pace incredibly slow. They were constantly wincing in pain from their wounds, although fortunately it seemed that all their burns were relatively mild; they had gotten out quickly. Their clothes were reduced to shreds, but it wasn't like they needed to be particularly presentable, and the weather was mild. Lila's pace began to lag first, so Tandrus carried her, although this slowed him down as well. They had no idea where they were going, of course; they knew this was Ginnie's property, and it was somewhere in Allaria, but that was the start and finish of their knowledge. Lila, of course, had previous knowledge of the kingdom, but it could still be some time before she could determine where they were. It seemed unlikely to her that her erstwhile familiarity would actually be all that much help. They were well into evening—on this their fifth of seven days as humans—when the empty landscape around them finally gave way to something else:
