He led her down the road, holding her quite tightly. It took a few minutes for her to realize that there was no hope of getting him to follow her, and it was high time to abandon ship and run back, if she could. But she couldn't! Trying to wrench herself from his arms was so useless she wasn't sure if he even noticed the attempt. At a certain point she went boneless, hoping he'd let her go out of surprise, but instead he seamlessly swept her up into his arms and carried on, his pace now much faster. Her heart was pounding as her alarm approached panic. Where was he taking her? Where would she be when she eventually reverted? "Can you walk?" he asked, and she nodded automatically. At last he released her, but unfortunately she had been a bit too optimistic, for she very nearly fell flat on her face, and would have if he had not caught her again. He gave her support as he began walking from villager to villager, asking them if they knew her. He did not ask her, presumably assuming her muteness was due to a lack of understanding rather than a lack of voice. They all, of course, said they'd never seen her before. He told them all the same story: that he'd encountered her "looking rather lost" along the road into the woods up north. One person he talked with, a man with a bald head and a thick black moustache, standing with a few of his friends, said with surprise, "Up north? Those parts can get rather dangerous. Talk of folks disappearing. Why, this woman...
