Belboz! Lila's mind froze at this development. For a long moment, all she knew was that she recognized the name, and that it sent a tingle of foreboding down her toady spine.

But Ginnie was still talking: "I've just contacted him and described the problem, and he's agreed to help. So I'll be teleporting you to his place in just a few minutes. I'd ask if you're ready, but, well, you're a toad. Not much to do in the way of getting ready, is there?"

Lila's mind, slow from disuse, was having a hard time trying to both listen and remember exactly why this was a bad thing. And she lost her chance completely when Ginnie scooped her up as she began to sing. Lila immediately relaxed, contentedly riding in Ginnie's palm as she carried her to one of her workshops, set her down, and began to draw sigils in chalk around her.

And presently, Lila was somewhere else: Belboz's tunnels. She was still completely relaxed, basking in the afterglow of Ginnie's enchanting song, as Belboz—the necromancer who had changed her into Lilith and shipped her off to be married before she'd run away and been found and transformed by Wenda—approached her.

"Lila the toad," he greeted with a smile, crouching down over her. "I'm Belboz. Pleasure to meet you." Lila looked up at him, not moving or registering any sort of recognition.

  1. Belboz had had his suspicions when Ginevra had described the "beautiful voiceless woman" to him, and would certainly be getting to the bottom of this.
  2. Belboz had not made the connection, and was simply doing this as a favor to Ginevra.
