Lod

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 117986

The giant called himself Lod. He was a solid twenty-three feet tall and could easily hold Hannah in one hand, which he did as he carried her back, walking slowly, distracted as he admired her beauty. He had never seen anything like her, and she was utterly different from him, a blessing he had never known, and so he treated her with eminent care.

He arranged her gently in the patchwork of animal skins he called his bed, and went to tidy up his cave, sweeping up dust and bones from the floor and glancing at her every few minutes, scratching his long beard nervously with his tough, cracked fingernails.

Hannah climbed slowly to consciousness, and was not quite sure whether she was still dreaming as she slowly took in her surroundings. Upon seeing Lod, she covered her mouth, but a tiny gasp managed to escape, and he had keen ears. "Hello!" he grunted nervously, waving from across the large stone room. "Lod no hurt pretty girl. Pretty girl live here! Lod keep safe. No worry!"

Hannah blinked, her mind still working very slowly. "Very pleased to make your acquaintance, Lod," she said in a tiny voice. "My name is Hannah, daughter of Muriel of Littleton."

The number of syllables compounded with a few unknown words appeared to confuse Lod. "Hannadot... Ter... of... of Little? Hannah little! Lod big!"

"Yes," she squeaked, taking in his sallow, oily skin, his crooked, yellowed teeth, and his protruding, jiggling belly. "You are very big indeed. And how lovely your home is. Thank you very much for permitting me to stay, I am delighted."

"Stay? Stay!" Lod cried in joy. "Hannadot Little stay! Oh! Hungry?" Without awaiting an answer, he crossed the floor, each step causing minor tremors, and disappeared through the opening, which, to Hannah, appeared to be a straight drop into the blue sky.

She looked down, and found that the drop to the floor was a sheer one of at least twelve feet. She was physically weak, and always had been, even ignoring her tiredness after last night's venture. This was so confusing... Even now, through her fear at the new situation, she was relieved to be away from the school. They had never mistreated her, and had taught her every important skill a girl like her should have, and yet... She had been feeling an increasing tension, almost unbearable, in every bit of her body to get out.

She did not regret it. And she hoped she would not come to.

It was about half an hour later that Lod returned, slapping down the carcass of a deer into the bed beside her. The very action caused her heart to jump dangerously in her chest, but upon seeing the creature's dead eyes and eviscerated belly, she was compelled to lean over and empty her stomach.

Lod seemed extraordinarily distressed as she attempted to compose herself amid her own shivering. "Oh no! Hannadot Little sick? Not want tasty deer?" And Hannah found herself grasped, firmly but not comfortably, and lifted abruptly and swiftly through the air. Lod brought her up next to his face to examine her, and if her upset stomach and the sudden movement wasn't enough, his breath did it. She passed out.

Lod poked and prodded her in increasing worry, realizing she had suddenly fallen asleep again. What had he done wrong?

  1. Lod suddenly reasoned that she must need people food. He set her down and immediately left to raid the nearest town, determined to get her what she needed.
  2. Lod eventually learned that she required materials to cook her food, and set about gathering them for her.
  3. Lod eventually decided she must not like meat, and set out to fetch her fruits and herbs from the forest.
