Fred knew that he was likely to have time for only one blow before the dragon turned its head enough to breath fire at him, probably lethally. His body was covered by the flamebane mail, but his head was unprotected. He lunged, putting his whole weight behind the thrust, and aiming at the side of the dragon's neck, where he hoped the beast would have relatively little protection from its scales. By concentrating all the force of his strike at one point, he thought he had a far better chance of penetrating than if he used the side of his blade for a slash or chop.
