Tunnel buddies

"I had no idea." Astra's voice is utterly defeated.

"Neither did I, milady," Fred replies.

"Of course I grew up reading picture books and scrolls with dragons illustrated on their pages, but the reality is so vastly different. The creature is, is... Is-"

"Immense," offered Fred. "Soaked and redolent in eldritch energy and magic. Endowed with glittered hypnotic eyes like living emeralds."

Astra nodded. "And more. Its hold over the Dragazons seems unbreakable. And its scales are clearly impenetrable. You were right, Lord Fred. We should have made haste, gone home, prepared properly and returned."

"We would still have failed, milady," Fred replied. "Nothing anyone at home holds in their lore even hinted at the power of this creature. This is not some horror from days of old lurking in a cold dank cave, or a black-maned lion preying on travellers in the hills. This is something unique."

Astra began to cry.

Fred nodded silently. Best perhaps that the emotion be released, after which in the following calm better plans might be laid.
