Hannendine the Sorceress

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 116930

Hannendine, initially, was not sure what to make of this. "You're going to make me a sorceress?"

"Yes. I see a great future for you, my sweet, and it is time you started to realize it."

Hannen went around the next few days in deep contemplation. She wasn't sure why Marcelina, her fraternal twin, hadn't been selected to undergo the same ritual--but it did make sense. She'd always been cleverer than Marcelina. Really, cleverer than every other child her age.

In any case she was a dutiful daughter, and willingly went along with the ceremony. Her papa gave her an elixir which quickly made her very sleepy when she drank it, and presently she was unable to stay awake. She jolted back to consciousness an indeterminate amount of time later to find her body completely filled and covered with tingles and tiny stabs of pain. She cried a little, but when it was done, she knew it had worked.

The following week, she cast her first spell: fireball. Three weeks later came her first successful transmutation when she turned a white dress into a pair of ballet slippers. And this began years and years of intense training sessions that lasted from sunup to dinnertime every single day.

Her papa taught her to use her magic to fight, to sneak, to create illusions, to probe another creature's mind, to brew potions, and so much more. He trained her to be quick on her feet as well, and to know when magic may not be necessary at all. Frequently, in the evenings, he would take her on hunting trips and outings on the town. She enjoyed these in their own right, but usually there would be at least a few moments when her papa would say, "Cast a locating spell and capture a magical creature; I'll be waiting here for your return" or nudge her and whisper, "See that boy over there? Go talk to him and use your magic to get him to tell you a secret he's never told anyone." And when they came home, she would finally have some alone time, to do with as she pleased--except on the days her papa also gave her lessons in etiquette, embroidery, singing, and other similar ladylike activities.

She didn't exactly enjoy the training, but she wanted to please her father, and she did enjoy spending time with him. And truth be told, she enjoyed her powers too--she just would've preferred to use them on her own terms.

  1. Hannen was eleven when one of her spells backfired spectacularly, with terrible consequences.
  2. Hannen was twelve when her powers inexplicably disappeared.
  3. Hannen was thirteen when she read her father's log in secret and discovered, to her horror, that he was not really her father--Arius had kidnapped her from her true father, Belboz, whom he had enchanted to forget her.
  4. Hannen was fourteen when she was recruited for the High Council of Sorcerers of Allaria's draft, and sent off to train under them.
  5. Hannen was fifteen when Marcelina disappeared, and she set out on a quest to find her.
  6. Hannen was sixteen when a passing witch cast a curse on her that neither she nor her father could break.
  7. Hannen was seventeen when she fell in love with a boy from the village.
  8. Hannen was eighteen when her father revealed to her what she had been training for all this time.
