Freda protested a bit more, but Rick continued to propound his idea, and eventually she assented. To Rick it was more than a little strange; they were discussing where she would spend the rest of her life, and she seemed rather ambivalent about the whole business. What on earth had been done to his dear friend? They traveled to the property of Rick's family, and after he explained the situation, Rick's father agreed to give Freda a comfortable life. Freda was glad to hear this, and it would certainly be nice to be able to hope for future visits from one of her oldest friends. Maybe this wasn't so bad after all. Rick did also ask if there was anyone else she wanted him to tell about her fate, such as her family. Freda thought about that one for a long time, and eventually expressed, her sorrow rather dulled but still present, that she would rather he tell them that Fred had died. It would be easier on everyone involved. And in many ways, it was true. Presently Rick bade her farewell, saying he must resume the quest, but he would see her when he got back. She was sent to a farm, where everyone seemed to treat her with some level of aversion for some days before they began to relax, becoming accustomed to her ability to speak, and the knowledge of what she once had been bothered them less as the evidence suggested it might as well not be true. She was just a cow who dropped the occasional comment--nothing more. Now after a few months, she gave birth to a bull calf. That calf was to be given the same treatment as she, per Rick's father's orders. She cared for it, and wanted for nothing. Life was good. Almost a year after she had begun her new life on this lovely farm, news arrived that
