Ambushed!

The road they were on led through a forest. It was only a dirt road, but fortunately it was high summer so it was in quite good condition. So it was an unpleasant surprise when the the road took a sharp turn and Mira - who was the one up front driving - saw that a substantial tree had been felled so that it lay across the trail and blocked their way. She called back into the caravan: "The road ahead is blocked by a fallen tree. It looks as though someone did it deliberately, which is odd. We could never hope to move it, so I'm afraid there's nothing else for it but to turn around and find another route. It is likely to delay us substantially."

But before she could turn the caravan around - which would not be easy, as the road was not very wide - a band of brigands emerged from behind the undergrowth. It was clearly they who had blocked the road.

1. They took the horse, caravan and all its contents, as well as the girls' dresses and shoes. Then they let the sisters go, clad only in their underwear, to make their way to a settlement as best they could.
2. They decided that if they sold the girls into slavery they should fetch a tidy sum.
3. Unexpectedly, someone came to their aid.
