At the Telos

As she climbed down the stairs and left the building, she pondered. She tried to clear her mind, but her thoughts kept returning to the scroll. Strange prophecies, political intrigue, loss of memory... it all sounded like something out of some sci-fi or fantasy movie. Considering the way things were going, she wouldn't have been surprised if her memory loss had been due to someone casting a spell on her. But there was no such thing as magic, of course, and she should know that since she was a doctor of science... right?

As Stacy Jones walked through the streets, someone was watching her.

She was a woman. At first sight, most people would have not given her another thought. She was of medium height, with brown hair, not strikingly attractive but not strikingly unattractive either. She seemed built to blend into a crowd.

But anyone who took a closer look at her would see that there was something striking about her: her eyes. They were bright purple. They seemed to bore into you, examining you like an insect under a magnifying glass. They held no emotion, no compassion.

Right now, she seemed to be waiting for a cab, but in fact was watching Stacy from across the street. She watched as Stacy moved through the crowd, making her way to whatever her destination was. Stacy eventually stopped and walked into the Telos Cybercafe. Quietly, her watcher followed her.

Stacy walked into the Cybercafe, ordered a coffee, and sat down in front of a computer. She looked around the room, hoping she would recognize the person she was supposed to meet, but had not even the faintest glimmer of recognition.

Then, someone walked up to her table. He was a man about her age, fairly handsome, with dark hair and glasses. "Hi, Stacy," he said.

1. His voice was that of the man who called her on the phone.
2. His voice was not that of the man who called her on the phone.
