The two approached Vigilus and his cart with their money. He immediately proved himself rather classist by saying, "Normally I don't deal with beggars, but you two are so exquisitely beautiful I'll make an exception!" "Um. Okay," said Ermentrude. "We want to buy a crystal ball." Vigilus was both put out and put off by the lack of reaction to his charm, but neither of the women with whom he was speaking specialized in graciousness. He accepted their payment and gave them one of the balls, which were each bluish tinted, made of glass, and about the size of a grapefruit. "To use it," he said, wrapping it in a cloth, "simply lay your hand on it and speak the name of the person whom you want to talk to. When you do, wherever they are, a floating ball of light with a vague image of your face will appear a few feet from them and project your voice. The duration of the connection is slightly different depending on the ball but it will last anywhere between ten and twenty minutes. After that, it will go dark and become a useless bauble." The sisters excitedly took the ball back to the Green Candle, and on Isabella's lunch break, they gathered around it in her room. Isabella laid one hand upon it and spoke the name of their father, Lord Frederick D'Honaire.
