The town was small, so begging was even less remunerative than it otherwise might have been. Isabella did her best at the tavern and would sneak her companions small amounts of food in the evenings, but she was very wary of being caught. In the meantime, Katrina and Ermentrude tried to be friendly beggars, the type you want to give money to, but neither was very good at it, as the former was too aggressive and the latter too dour. And all three of their dispositions suffered from their feelings of emptiness, of incompleteness. They worked out, after a few days, that since they were staying in one place for so long at the very beginning of their journey, they would arrive at the D'Honaire residence long after any communication had occurred in regards to ransom for Marigold -- if it did at all. So they would be able to find out fairly quickly upon arrival what had transpired, and whether there was any hope of recovering one of their two missing parts. If only they had a way to contact their family, so that when and if they heard from a pirate about ransom for a daughter they didn't really have, they'd know what was going on! Life went on like this for many days, until
