"Because," he said, "you are all too beautiful to be cursed with a life aboard this ship with that man. Midnight. Be ready."

At midnight that night, the sisters had not slept a wink, and they heard a sound outside their door. Moments later, Pierre appeared again, and motioned for them to follow him.

Carrying nothing but the rags in which they had been dressed after having their gowns taken from them, the four sisters followed the cabin boy across the deck under the light of the moon. A rowboat was prepared, with oars, and some supplies, and he motioned for them to get inside.
