From behind Jane appeared a host of maids and ladies-in-waiting, carrying gowns and shoes and other supplies. The five women looked at each other in bewilderment and fear as each of them was approached by three to six others, and the large room became much more crowded. They each were directed to remove their gowns and sit on their beds. They protested weakly, but each of them had more or less one-fifth of Fred's strength of will (with Katrina being the most gifted in this regard and Ermentrude being the least) and so they eventually acquiesced. They found, to their surprise and alarm, that they were all wearing various feminine trappings, perhaps the most alarming of which being their corsets. The ladies began presenting each of them with shoes and dresses while Jane watched with an enormous smile, making recommendations such as "Oh, Kat, that color so brings out your eyes" and "I don't know about that one, Mari, it complements your figure but the lace bit in front is a bit odd, don't you think?" By the time they halfheartedly selected their ballgowns all five of their heads were spinning. As their maids and ladies chose shoes for them and did their hair, Jane told them, "Now I know this is the first ball we've had in a very long time and you won't quite know how to conduct yourselves, but don't worry, I'll teach you!" So, a few hours before guests began to arrive, all the princesses came to the ballroom to receive training from Jane. At this point Jane became frustrated because they began to protest, even demanding to be released. She handled this by telling them
