It Finally Comes Out

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 116217

And so the conversation had to end there, and time continued to pass.

Freda came to understand that her intellect was not great enough to engage in any serious conversation or get any naturally-born human to listen to her. She didn't know how to fix this or what to do. She just tried to console herself in the knowledge that at least Gabriel and Mara were not in any pain.

Months passed, and Richardyne's wedding day arrived. Freda was invited, but hated every moment of the preparation (the other servants covered her face with with powder and slime and did all sorts of things to her hair) and the ceremony itself (she had no idea what she was supposed to do), and was sad to see Richardyne move out. Later that night, they were back at home, sitting in Rosamunda's bed, as Freda did her best to remove all the... things from her hair, and Rosamunda sighed, "Richardyne was so pretty today, Freda. I wish Rick could've been there."

Freda's clumsy hands halted at the name. Rick? It was so familiar... "Sir Rick?" she asked slowly.

Rosamunda nodded. "Our brother, the one who went missing. Sir Ricardo O'Farrell."

"Sir Rick," said Freda again, brain chugging along furiously. There... there was somebody else, wasn't there? He didn't have a special place in her heart like Gabriel and Mara, but she had certainly liked him... he'd been traveling with them for a little while...

"Sir Rick was turned to rock too," she said blankly.

Rosamunda swiveled around in alarm. "I beg your pardon?"

"Along with Gabriel and Mara," said Freda. "A long time ago. By Belboz the nec - the necr - nercom - the wizard."

Rosamunda stared at her for several seconds more, before springing off the bed, grabbing her by the wrist, and tearing through the house, screaming, "Father! Father!"

Robert made Freda tell him everything she could remember, which, needless to say, was not much. And then he was out of the house, and Rosamunda was weeping, and Freda was completely bewildered but suddenly hopeful that something might be done.

Robert dipped low into his savings to fund a job for a large team of sorcerers to break into Belboz's home and restore all his statues. Inside the week, the stories were spreading all across the land of the scores of people freed from petrification. And one week after that, Rick was back home.

Many joyful tears were shed that day in the O'Farrell household. Freda hung back, but it didn't take too long for Rosamunda to say to Rick, "Freda here was the one who let us know where you were! She said she was there when you were petrified!"

Rick stared openly. "I mean... there was a Freda there, but... but she was..."

Freda nodded, unintentionally obscuring an important detail from the other O'Farrells by interrupting. "Yes, I became like this so I could help you. Do you know where Gabriel and Mara are?"

Rick stared for a few seconds longer, but finally managed to falteringly communicate that

  1. he didn't know where they were; they'd been separated shortly after being revived.
  2. he didn't know where they were; their statue forms hadn't been beside him when he'd woken up.
  3. they were likely still with the High Council of Sorcerers of Allaria, being processed.
  4. they had gone home.
