Freda began to struggle, letting out groans of panic that would have been moos if she'd been in the form she was used to, until a man ducked into the tent, leering at her. "Shut your face," he growled. "Who are you? Where am I?" asked Freda in alarm. "Don't matter much, since the answer to both will be changin' in due course," replied the man, and spat into the dirt. "There'll be an auction come mornin'. You won't fetch much, but better'n nothin'." Freda didn't understand what he was saying, so she just asked desperately, "Can you help me? I have some friends who--" "I ain't helpin' ya, except ta help ya move on to your next home, wherever that'll be. Now shut yer yap!" And he disappeared outside again. Freda was terrified. She didn't even know where she was! How was she to have known that a woman sleeping alone in the woods at night would be open to such danger? They fed her dry, tasteless food that night, and the following morning she was lined up with several other sad-looking people. They stepped up onto blocks, people in the crowd shouted some numbers, and then the man in the big hat yelled "Sold!" Freda wasn't sure what was going on, but when it was her turn, the man said, "We have here a woman who's average in pretty much every way, except intelligence, in which she's way below!
