Belboz promptly said, "Do not speak to me unless I speak to you first." And the now-teenaged Rick snapped his mouth shut. Belboz snapped his fingers, and their clothes reshaped and resized themselves. Mara and Gabriel now wore long robes, purple and blue respectively, to match Belboz's rich grey ones. Meanwhile, Rick's armor had transformed into a scratchy brown tunic. "Now," Belboz announced, "my children, your names won't do for the son and daughter of a powerful sorcerer such as myself, and certainly not for the powerful sorcerers you will one day become under my care. You shall henceforth be called Gairovald and Maerwynn." "But—" protested little Mara, until Belboz placed his hands over both their foreheads, and their expressions went slack. Rick could only watch this injustice helplessly, and Belboz turned to him presently. "Not to worry, you won't need a new name. In fact, you don't need a name at all. Servant—actually, slave. Yes, that sounds much better. Slave, take this cow to the enclosure down the hall and to the left. One of your tasks will be to milk her daily." A collar with a cowbell appeared around Freda's neck, and she mooed anxiously as Rock stiffly took hold of it and began to lead her down the stony tunnel. "What's going on?" she asked fearfully as they walked, and he replied, thin-lipped, "Don't worry, old girl, I'll find a way out of this." And did he try. But within days, Freda could find no problem with this new arrangement. It was even better than before, because she didn't have to go questing. She still felt great affection for the transformed Mara and Gabriel, even if they didn't remember any of the real experiences they had shared. They spent a fair amount of their free time laughing and playing in Freda's enclosure, when they weren't training and studying under Belboz's watchful eye. But Rick didn't have these luxuries. He toiled away every day, only reliably getting a few minutes of companionship each day, when he milked Freda. Life continued like this for some time. It had been at least several months when...
