Getting to Know One Another

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 115798

She was trembling. She couldn't believe what she'd just done - told this perfect stranger that they were eternally bound! What if he was already eternally bound to another? Sooner or later he would feel the pull urging him away [115649], and would know that she had lied to him!

What if he was bound to the fairy he'd been imprisoned with? If so, maybe if they stayed in this area, she'd be close enough to him that he might not feel the pull...

She couldn't believe the schemes she was thinking of. What had loneliness driven her to become?

"Nadia," he said slowly, staring openly at her.

"Don't you know me, my love?" she whispered, and her voice cracked.

A tremendous guilt found its way on his face, and he said, "I... I think so..."

She rushed into his arms to hide her tears, and he wrapped them around her hesitantly. Immediately her guilt was joined by happiness, by contentment. Nobody had held her like this in such a long time.

She spent the morning weaving a tale explaining his memory problem, very similar to the truth: a sorcerer had captured him, and done something to him, and he'd been unconscious when she rescued him. She told him that his tower was nearby and he'd built it recently, and that they weren't going to move away because this was their home and they'd die before retreating.

He was sweet. Gentle. He listened quietly and apologized for not remembering. Nadia perfected the science of feeling guilty and happy all at once.

They spent the next several days just getting to know each other. Gailen asked if he'd always had such long hair, and in a panic she responded that he kept it long because she liked it that way. He looked perturbed, but he nodded, and asked her if she'd braid it for him.

By the end of the first week, Nadia was sure that this fairy was a blessing, a reward after her long loneliness. Even if he still seemed puzzled, not feeling real love for her, not remembering why they were together, he was the best thing that had ever happened to her.

  1. But she felt so guilty for leaving that other fairy behind. So one day, hoping that once she was freed, she too would remember nothing, she said to Gailen, "I think we should check that sorcerer's home in case he has any other fairies trapped there."
  2. So she resolved to let that other fairy stay in her jar. She was alive and well, Nadia had seen it herself, and Gailen didn't remember her anyway. No reason to ruin her own happiness.
