He returned to the car, and by the time he'd gotten there, he'd carried 120 pounds for an hour and a half straight, and was more than exhausted. Sorcerers were not exactly known for their brawn. He loaded Fred into the shotgun seat and sat in the driver's seat for several minutes, just breathing deeply. Both of their phones were full of alerts by this point, several messages and calls from Mel and Joe. He ignored them. Presently Fred began to stir, and when her eyes opened it took her several seconds to process her surroundings. Finally she looked over at Belboz, and said slowly, "We're in your car. We didn't go through the portal." "No, Fred. The portal is closed." She didn't even try to hide her relief. "It will be several months, at least, before it reopens." "Good," she said flatly. "Now take me back home." "Fred, this world, this place, this is not your home. Your home is Allaria, and it is dying. You were sent on a quest to protect it. Don't you remember?" "Yes," she said sourly. "But I have a new home now, and you have no right to pull me away from it." "Clearly something was done to you to make you feel this way. Tell me what. I am very weak in this world - back home, the air is saturated with magic to draw from, but here, I can only get it from within myself, and it takes a long time to regenerate. How long, I don't know yet. But if you tell me what happened, I may be able to find a way to reverse it." "Nothing happened." "Lord Fred, you've been here for only a few days! I know you have been given memories of a life as Angela, but you know full well that they are false! Therefore your stubborn attachment must mean that your emotions have been tampered with, and I can help you!"
