The tears were flowing fast and Hannah didn't even have any desire to suppress them. She just wanted her mummy. And this one, even though she was not Fred's mummy, would do. Muriel took her child up into her arms, and Hannah hugged her tight, wailing into her shirt. "There there, Hannah," Muriel murmured. "It's all right. I'm just trying to teach you all that you must learn to grow up to be a good woman with a happy life." Hearing this goal should have made the once-knight cry even harder, but she felt strangely comforted and invigorated by her mother's words. After several minutes, she calmed down, and said, "I love you, Mummy." "I love you too, Hannah. Now, it's time for your chores." At three years old, Hannah's chores were few, but her mother worked her hard, considering. Still, she was allowed a few hours of play time every day with the toys given to her by Muriel's altruistic friend Belboz, whom Hannah affectionately referred to as "Unca Belby." She was taken to visit him often. Often Hannah would begin to weep upon experiencing the tingling of memory reminding her that she had once been more than this, but her mother always scolded her for her ingratitude, and sometimes punished her. This lack of adult dignity did not help, but Fred no longer had an adult mind, so through the punishments, she learned her lesson, and over time stopped crying about it. At least when Muriel or Belby could see. By her fourth birthday, Fred seemed like a distant dream, an imaginary friend.
