Previously, the enchantment that Fred was under had made it impossible for her to leave the family's house and small garden except when accompanied by Henry. It had been impossible to keep that a secret from him - it meant that she could not visit the village alone to do any shopping, for instance - but of course she was unable to tell him the real reason why, just as she was unable to reveal any other information concerning her enchantment. He just assumed that it must be some strange phobia of hers.

Now, though, she found to her surprise that she could leave. Was that intentional, or a mistake on Belboz's part? Whichever it was, now she had to decide whether to take advantage of her new-found freedom. Whereas she longed to leave and to be free from the drudgery and boredom that her current existence entailed, she also knew that she would miss her children terribly since she truly had a mother's love for them. (Though Henry was a good man, she wouldn't miss him.) Luckily her youngest child had recently been weaned, so that wouldn't present a problem.

  1. She decided to leave. Taking advantage of a rare moment when she was alone, she wrote a note to tell Henry that she had left, packed a change of clothing and some food in a bag, and set off with no clear destination in mind.
  2. She decided to stay.
