The woods are dark and scary, but Susie is a remarkably brave little girl—some residual knightliness still alive in her from her long-buried life as Fred. She toddles through the trees until she grows too tired to continue, and rests until noon the following day under the low-hanging branches of an old oak. She finds that she is very hungry upon waking up, and goes to look for something to eat. Presently she comes upon some blueberries, and eats till she's had her fill. She stuffs a handful into her pocket for later and continues on. Truthfully, Susie has no idea where she's going, and in fact no idea just how large the world is. Her plan is to just walk until she finds her daddy. The first few days go well, and there is no trace of pursuit from the orphanage. Then Susie
