Romestám kept the cow in an outside enclosure on her own and didn't bother her except to make sure she had enough food and water, but he never actually entered the enclosure. Several months passed. Sometimes he tried showing himself to the cow to gauge her reaction, but it was always negative. He wasn't sure why she seemed to dislike him so much, but it wasn't going to stop him from trying to help her. Finally, the day came that the cow went into labor. He stood by during the process, helping in any way he could, and fortunately the cow was too distracted to try to cause him any trouble. Soon enough, she had given birth to a brand new heifer. Romestám watched the two of them, and for once the mother seemed so happy. He sighed, rubbing the back of his head, wishing this sort of situation would never come to be, but here it was, and he had to deal with it. The baby would be weaned in about eight months. Then she wouldn't need her mother anymore, and there would be no reason not to turn her back. Freda, for her part, loved her baby very much, and she was deathly afraid that this man was going to take her away. So, now more than ever she spent her days trying to find a way to escape. Of course, she never did; he was a wise wizard many, many times smarter and more powerful than she was. But she lived her days in constant stress over it.
