After Freda's pleas were rejected, she stood there with mouth open, searching for words, for several long moments. Vycynth waited patiently for a while before saying, "Truth be told, I don't know if it would even be possible to restore you. I only discovered your knightly origins by chance, and if I'd tried just a few weeks after I did, they probably would have been completely buried. No, I'm afraid you're a cow, through and through - and you're mine." Freda didn't know what to do, didn't know what to say. So she did and said nothing. Just a few days afterwards, Vycynth brought a bull to the enclosure, and soon enough, as much as she didn't at all care to think about it, Freda was pregnant. She didn't even know how long the gestation period of a cow was. She wished she did; that would at least provide her with some idea of how long she had been like this, even if it was an undershot. Eventually she gave birth to a calf. It was, of course, unlike anything Fred had experienced, and she was glad (though not for the first time) that it was in some sense dull and ordinary to her. The heifer grew. She felt affection for it despite herself. Eventually she knew instinctively that it was weaning, and around this time, Vycynth examined her and informed her with a smile that she was pregnant again. Would this be Fred's life? Living as a talking dairy cow, bearing a few calves and munching grass, until she died?
