The following evening, Angela, Joe, and their new son Dennis (as Joe had named him) returned to their home. With each passing hour Angela's life as Fred seemed more and more distant and ridiculous. And it terrified her.

The house was a modest thing. They were a fairly average family, in looks and occupation and popularity. Dennis was their first child. Angela tried not to think about how she was about to leave them alone without a word of explanation.

  1. In the middle of the night, she rose and began to pack, being careful not to wake Joe.
  2. Though she hadn't meant to, she was exhausted, and slept straight through the first night.
