"Wait a moment," said Anna, deciding that she had nothing to lose from
following
her hunch that the devices inlaid on the men's armour were
familiar. "Don't you work for
Lucrezia the Damned?" A wary look came over the leader's face, telling her
that
she had been correct. "And what if we do?" he responded. "We have very
important information for her, that must given to her personally." The man
pondered
for a moment, then said: "Very well. I can spare some men to escort the
two of you to her. If
you should happen to be lying, then you will merely have delayed your
death by a few
days and ensured that it will be far less pleasant. Unless she decides to
keep you
alive as additions to her menagerie, of course," Anna did not know what he
meant by that,
but she didn't like the sound of it.
So four knights escorted Anna and Sir James out of the valley, at the opposite end to that by which they had entered it. They had been stripped of their weapons as soon as they had been taken prisoner, of course, so were in no position to overpower their guards even had they wished to. If Lucrezia was the object of Anna's quest, she knew she would be meeting her before long. What she would do then, she had no idea. With a name like Lucrezia the Damned, Anna supposed that the woman was almost certain to be evil. Thus she supposed that the aim of her quest was to kill her. If she got the opportunity, of course, which was a very big "if" indeed.
