Charlie loads the child onto his horse to begin the long journey to the orphanage. It is two weeks before they arrive. Charlie flatly refuses to tell Susie where they're going, but she doesn't seem to be that curious. She just snuggles up against him and his heart breaks in two every time he looks down at her. Shortly before their arrival he gives her a simple potion he'd had already prepared at home to ensure that she stays asleep for a good few hours, and then shows up at the doors of the orphanage with her in his arms, saying that he is her father but he cannot care for her right now. He turns her over to the woman who answers the door and is gone as soon as he can be. The moment he mounts his horse again, he begins to weep. Susie wakes up in a strange bed in a strange room full of other such beds, most of which contain girls her age. Shortly a woman appears, introduces herself as Miss Evelyn, and tells her that her father is unable to care for her right now, but he said he would come back one day.
