If the characters really were Japanese, then at least she had learnt where the Dark Blade had probably originated. Were the numbers perhaps the equivalent of those characters in some encoding system? Or perhaps they were her membership number in the organisation? Or even a password?
It was pointless to speculate, she realised. She simply didn't know enough. As the first step towards learning more, she wanted to know what the remaining numbers were. She hadn't yet investigated the contents of her bag. It seemed unlikely that they would include a razor, but there might well be a manicure set, and she could use the scissors to cut off her pubic hair. That would leave a stubble that might well prove itchy, but it ought to allow her to read the missing numbers. She wondered if she had deliberately grown out her pubic hair so that no one could readily read them. Emerging from her bath, she towelled herself dry and then went to get her bag. There would probably be stuff in there - a diary, maybe? - that would give her clues about her past life, she thought. After finding out the remaining numbers and writing them down somewhere, along with as good a copy of the Japanese characters as she could manage, she ought to thoroughly search its contents. She quickly found a manicure set with a pair of nail scissors. She painstakingly snipped away her pubic hair, until eventually she could read all the numbers. Finding a pen and a credit card slip in her bag, she wrote them down on the back of the slip. along with a copy of the mysterious characters. She put the slip safely away in her bag. It obviously wouldn't do for Jacob to see it. It occurred to her that her vetting of him couldn't have been very thorough, if as her chief bodyguard she had employed someone whose daughter had been killed by the Dark Blade.
