Fred Gives Melissa Some Unwelcome News

"What's the filling?"

"Bully beef. And butter, of course."

"Not a low-fat spread?"

"A what?"

"Never mind. I think I would like a bite. It's lucky thar I stopped being a vegetarian not long ago. I'm afraid I shan't be able to be very lady-like, though, with my hands being chained up."

"Don't worry about that."

So Fred held the sandwch within a few inches of her mouth, so that she could incline her head to take a bite. It turned out to be an impressively large bite too; lady-like it definitely was not. Fred looked a little ruefully at the small piece of his sandwich that was all that remained.

While Melissa was chewing and swallowing her mouthful, Fred said: "You do realise that I'm here to slay the dragon?"

Melissa looked horrified, and when she could speak again said: "You mustn't do that! He's a real sweetie. Besides who would free me from my bonds?"

"I thought you didn't want to be freed?"

Melissa was beginning to form the impression that this knight wasn't the sharpest tool in the box. "Not right now, obviously. But I don't want to be trapped here until I starve to death."

"Well if I manage to kill the dragon then I'll come back and free you. All right?"

1. "I suppose it will have to be, if I can't dissuade you from trying to kill him."
2. "No! What if you get lost on the way back? Or if you and the dragon both die?"
3. Before Melissa could reply, a dark shadow fell across the surprisingly well-lit cavern. The dragon had returned to check up on the well-being of his captive.
