For a moment Henry could not figure out what was the matter with his boat, but when he saw the merfolk, his heart dropped to his stomach. "What have you done with Waverly?" called Havelock. At this point his wife became visible on the vessel next to the human, and Havelock was immediately worried. "Waverly! You're on the human's boat? How? Get in the water!" "He used his last wish to make me human," Waverly responded, brow furrowed in unrecognition. "I now require air to live." She would have showed them one of her feet to demonstrate, but she wasn't quite coordinated enough for that yet. Havelock's heart sank in horror while the other merfolk glanced at each other in concern. "What else did he wish for?" "That's none of your business," Henry cried desperately, but he was silenced when one of the mermaids began to sing. He listened with a wide, vacuous grin on his face. "Waverly," Havelock prompted. "What did he wish?" Waverly answered, "For me to fall in love with him, and... something else, I can't recall." She gave the merman a sidelong glance, and said, "Ah, who are you?" Just as Havelock had feared. Humans were even worse than he had previously believed. His heart broke in two.
